Welcome back from the weekend! I hope all you momma’s had a lovely Mother’s Day! We enjoyed a special day with brunch at one of my favorite restaurants, and then hung out at the Tulip Festival where we go every year! But walking around the Tulip Festival this weekend really had me feeling nostalgic. Our family started talking about all about our favorite traditions and it prompted me to share them with all of you. I firmly believe that a life rooted in tradition gives children a firm sense of who they are and a foundation for cherishing time with family. Today I am sharing five of our family traditions! They may not be earth shattering or quite that imaginative, but they are the bricks on which our home and family life are being built.
I think the Tulip Festival is so special to me because it has been a family tradition ever since I have become a mom! Every mother’s day weekend in Albany the park is filled with vendors, amazing food and the most beautiful tulips everywhere! It’s just so special being able to walk around and enjoy the day with family and it has become so special to us. We always go to this one statue and take pictures next to our favorite tulips and look for our favorite crafty vendor that has fresh dried potpourri!
This one is big in our home. We try to eat dinner together as a family at least 3-4 nights per week. I know that we are lucky that our schedules permit that, but we also work like crazy to make sure that they do. I grew up eating dinner around the table as a family every night and saw such value in that. Parker already feels it and if one of us is out-of-town or if we are away as a family, there is always this sense of calm when we sit back down for our next family dinner together. My husband sometimes gets so busy as a real estate agent and we even have a “lock box” for the phone so that we can really enjoy this time together. Luckily, I don’t have to pull this out very often, but this is when we talk about our days. We share the high and the low points and we just enjoy each other’s company. It’s a nice time to talk about what’s going on in school as well!
This is one of our Christmas traditions that we have carried on from my husband’s family! Every Christmas Eve, we celebrate with friends and family and we all receive flannel PJ’s from Bob’s Aunt! This has been something bob and his family have been doing since they were young, and I’m so glad we can continue this tradition with our family! We put on our pajamas and wake up Christmas morning all cute and cozy!
Birthday Morning Celebrations
Ever since Bob and I have been dating we have made our birthdays such a special day for one another. Every year on our birthdays, we wake each other up with our cards and/or gifts in bed and read our cards to one another out loud! We always make each other breakfast and coffee and make the morning a special time celebrating with family!
This is more of a treat for us girls than the kids, but hey we deserve it as moms, right?! Every year, my mom and her sisters celebrate their birthdays by spending a weekend together at the Mirabeau Spa instead of getting one another gifts. I don’t know how I got involved (I probably invited myself) but it has become one of my favorite weekends of the year! This place feels like another world and is in the cutest little town of Skaneateles, NY. They have the cutest little restaurants and shops, and it is the perfect little weekend getaway! We spend most of the day in robes with champagne and enjoy each other’s time together as my mom and her sisters all live a few hours away from one another! It’s such a special time to spend together, and I’m so lucky to be apart of this tradition!
I hope this inspires you to do some family traditions! What are some of your family traditions that you currently do with your family? I would love to hear from you-feel free to comment below!
